Teaching Methods

Working sessions are dedicated to collective and orientated reading of selected texts and films. Students are trained on technical of reading social sciences scientific texts and their arguing strategies. At the same time, they learn how to elaborate detailed synthesis  and train technicals of oral exposition and public presentations.

Overall objectivesTo present,, understand and debate the different possible frameworks of analysis of the operating of contemporary societies, as well as their recent evolution.

 

Specific objectivesTo train and frame the understanding and evaluation of the social constructions of reality.

Syllabus

The curricular unity is structurated over the interpretation of sociological images and texts. The principle directing the work in the unity is collective and orientated reading. Texts in analysis can be related to sociological topics or of specific authors, both reflecting on contemporary societies, specially the Portuguese one.

1. Different people: how are we, how many and how do we live. To gain the bread: what do we do. To change life: the end of rural society. Us and the others: a plural society. Citizens: political and social rights. Equality and conflict: social relations. A country similar to the others: an European society.

2. How convenient is to tele-live. The non inscription country. The non public space. What knowledge of democracy?  The small infinite. Of the economy of affection. Complaining, resentment, envy. The void and the full.  Trauma, horror and fear. The portuguese trauma and the actual climate.
