Teaching Methods

There will be a theoretical systemization of the underlying themes of the curricular unit, and the promotion of debate surrounding the selected bibliography. Students will solve different practical exercises: written commentaries about texts that point to syllabus contents; discussion of information concerning demographic and social structure characteristics; working with several data in order to calculate and understand different demographic variables; discussion of quantitative and qualitative data in order to establish a comparison between different historical and social realities.

Objectives
a) to recognise the object of demography and the main demographic theories; to recognise how that theoretical thinking was object of several critical discussions; b) to acquire a historical vision of the evolution of the world and Portuguese populations; to understand the human impact on the natural world; c) to understand the basic guidelines of demographic analysis; d) to understand the social causes and consequences concerning population structure and dynamics  

Competencies
a) to be able to discuss in a sociological way population’s issues as an object of inquiry and to be able to communicate (individually and collectively) that analysis using the oral and the written modes; b) capacity to measure and to interpret data applying the principal analysis methods concerning populations structure, fertility, mortality and migrations; c) capacity to apply the acquired knowledge in order to discuss current phenomena and processes concerning national, European or global scales

Syllabus

1) The origins and consolidation of the scientific study of the population: from the initial reflections on the population to the definition of demography as a scientific study; demographical science: unity and diversity; social phenomena and demographic processes: the population studied by the social sciences; causes and social consequences of the basic demographic phenomena. 2) Demographic perspectives: Malthus, his predecessors and his critics; the neo-malthusianism; the demographic transition - theoretical problems. 3) The evolution of the population: history of the world population and its perspectives of evolution; the Portuguese population - main traces of evolution. 4) Principles of demographic analysis: the dynamics of the population; the volumes and the rhythms of population growth; the demographic structures; the analysis of the demographic processes - mortality, natality, fertility and migrations.
