The student must have academic knowledge in the area of Geosciences given by attendance, with approval, in curricular units of the 1st cycle in Geology or of 2nd cycles from the Geosciences areas and he/she must understand the Portuguese language.

Teaching Methods

Presentation by specialists, of Geological Processes themes using the expositive methodology or the laboratories from the Earth Sciences Department- FCTUC.

Bibliographic research and the stabilising of the “state of art” of Geological Processes themes, which are of  interest to the student, using digital libraries and others, for the elaboration of a synthesis  work.

Oral presentation, done by the student, of the synthesis work.

Tutorial follow-up of the works performed by the student.

Learning Outcomes

The objectives of this curricular unit are the increase and development of knowledge of the students in advanced themes of Geological Processes and also to develop capacities in acquisition, systematization, interrelation, treatment and presentation of state of the art knowledge about Geological Processes which are important to their project of work.

Work Placement(s)

No

Syllabus

The syllabus of this Seminar consists in periodic sessions where current and relevant themes of Geological Processes are presented by specialists in the selected topics. The students will also present their works which are of interest to their investigation. Therefore, the syllabus will be adapted according to the goals of the students investigations. For example: if a student has a project to determine the petrogenesis of an igneous body, he/she may have to study modelling of fractional crystallization, partial fusion, magma mixing and ACF processes, or the use of Isotopic Geochemistry for the identification of these processes. Afterwards he/she will have to lecture on these studies.
