Recommended Prerequisites

Completion of Russian-Portuguese Translation II, or language skills in Russian corresponding to CEFR level A1.2.

Teaching Methods

The work carried out in class involves four stages:

– the teacher presents the topic and structure of texts; new grammar items are systematized in exercises;

– students carry out work of translation individually or in groups;

– in the following session translations are checked and problems encountered are discussed by the whole class;

– the final version of the translation is completed.

Special attention is paid to work with dictionairies and databases.

Learning Outcomes

This course will enable students to

- Develop skills in Russian corresponding to CEFR level A.2.1;

- Improve reading comprehension and writing skills, which are necessary for translation;

- Understand the basic vocabulary used in the media;

- Understand Russian newspaper texts of increasing complexity;

- Know how to use more efficiently Russian dictionaries and grammars as translation support tools.

This seminar prepares students to continue their learning of Russian autonomously.

Syllabus

1. Grammatical and lexical topics corresponding to CEFR level A 2.1 (pragmatic analysis based mostly on different models of journalistic texts in Russian).

2. Journalistic and sociopolitical texts:

- structural and stylistic varieties of different types of Russian media texts (news items, information articles, interviews, reports, etc.);

- specific aspects of Russian-Portuguese translation (interpretation of political and economic terms; lexical and grammatical shifts, analysis of contrastive terminologies, etc.).

3. Current sociocultural and political vocabulary required for developing generic skills in translation from Russian into Portuguese (identification, acquisition and use).

4. Selected thematic topics from current social, political, economic and cultural issues.
