Recommended Prerequisites

Level C1 in Portuguese is a prerequisite for all courses in the program.

Teaching Methods

Syllabus topics are developed through explanations and reading assignments, supplemented by class discussions and empirical data analysis. The teaching method thus intersects lectures and student collaboration.

Learning Outcomes

The syllabus aims at developing awareness of (i) language contact situations, (ii) the status of Portuguese worldwide, (iii) patterns of sociolinguistic and dialectal variation in selected communities.

Upon completing the course, the student is expected to:

1. General competencies:

- be able to define, with guided supervision, adequate research goals;

- be capable of selecting, with autonomy, credible and relevant information in the light of the research goals defined;

- plan and write an essay/report on the research carried out, and to present it orally.

2. Specific competencies:

- include, in his/her own conception of the functioning of natural languages, the inherent feature of variation in its different forms of expression;

- identify theoretical issues and methodological procedures relevant to the study of language contact and variation;

-reveal knowledge and skills enabling the description of the dynamics of the Portuguese language in different communities.
