Recommended Prerequisites
1st cycle of studies completed (prerequisite) and most of the units of the 1st year of a Master in the area of chemistry (recommended).
Teaching Methods
Practical classes in laboratories for advanced studies and/or scientific research where the student will learn how to use equipment and perform work related to current areas of scientific research or applied chemistry.
- Quantity and quality of the work performed (25%);
- Development of the student throughout the course with regard to skills and knowledge (25%)
- Master Thesis (25%)
- Oral presentation and defense of the work performed (25%).
Learning Outcomes
- Skills in the application of the chemical knowledge learned and ability to understand the resolution of current problems of qualitative and quantitative nature;
- Skills in evaluating and interpreting data and other information of chemical nature, and to elaborate synthetic global visions;
- Ability to deal with bibliographic information either primary or secondary sources and computer databases, including Web of Knowledge;
- Ability to use the Internet for data collection and electronic communication;
- Capacity for an adequate interpretation of observations and laboratory measurements and to relate them properly with the
adequate theories;
- Ability to inovate and perform scientific research.
- Competence of personal study with a view to professional training throughout life;
- Communication skills in spoken and written Portuguese and English;
- Ability to argue, both in written and orally.
Work Placement(s)
YesSyllabus
The Project aims at preparing the student for the pursuit of scientific research or professional activity.
The students will be faced with a real problem with scientific and/or technological relevance. During the Project the student is expected to clearly define the problem (including its contextualization in the scientific/technological/social areas) and develop work that could lead to its resolution. It will be given special significance on the student creativity and ability for critical analysis (of the work developed during the Project and information available in the literature).
The stage can be carried out within the Department or elsewhere in government or private Institutions.
The orientation of the stage is in charge of a supervisor appointed by the Direction of the Chemistry Department.
Head Lecturer(s)
Maria João Pedrosa Ferreira Moreno Silvestre
