Analytical  Chemistry I and II.

Teaching Methods

This course involves a computational and laboratory component to learning more specific in the area of chemical analysis. The student will make the discussion and presentation of the work carried out.

Learning Outcomes

This course aims the achievement of a set of mini-projects in the area of Chemical Quality Control, trying to reconcile a experimental aspect of chemical analysis methods with an appropriate statistical treatment of analytic results.

Syllabus

1. Chemical Quantification and statistical treatment of data:

- experimental errors and their impact (accuracy and precision)

- calibration and quantification (robust parametric estimates)

- sources of variability and their quantification (ANOVA)

- metrology - the combined uncertainty and expanded uncertainty

2. Determination of calcium content in milk by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Calibration, limit of detection, characterization of analytical response and estimation of uncertainties.

3. Analysis of total iron content in drinking water by molecular spectrophotometry using two different methods. Comparison of the methods and their results.

4. Determination of carbonate and bicarbonate  in a solid mixture using two different methods: acid - base volumetry  with indicators and potentiometry with a glass electrode. Statistical analysis of the results. Comparison of the results obtained in the two methods.
