Engineering Geology knowledge.
Lectures with presentation of the topics, with frequent reference to cases studies. Theoretical and practical classes where students solve proposed exercises, with the guidance of teacher. Study site visit.
Develop the skills to understand the importance of the geotechnical knowledge of the mechanical characteristics of the ground (rock and soil masses) as well as strengthening the ability to tailor solutions to the geotechnical characteristics of the ground and existing constraints.
Expose students to the fundamental concepts of analysis, design and dimensioning of foundations and earth retaining structures.
Shallow foundations: types; load capacity; estimated settlements.
Deep foundations: types; load capacity of a single pile; load tests; integrity tests; load capacity of a group of piles; settlement of a single pile and pile groups;
Rigid support structures: earth pressures; design of support walls.
Flexible support structures: main types; design and construction aspects; earth pressure and design of the various elements; external stability; pre-stressed anchors; induced movements; observation.
Support structures internally stabilized: stress mobilization mechanisms; design and dimensioning of reinforced earth walls.
