Recommended Prerequisites

Engineering Geology.

Teaching Methods

Lectures with presentation of the topics, with audiovisual means and frequent reference to cases studies. Theoretical and practical classes where students solve proposed exercises, with the guidance of teacher. Use of computer programs for geotechnical practice. Preparation of technical reports. Study site visit.   

Learning Outcomes

Understanding of Geotechnical concepts and its importance.

Skills development in the areas of planning, execution and interpretation of results of geological and geotechnical studies, using office, field and laboratory work.

Definition of geotechnical solutions according to technical, economic and temporal questions.

Ability to processing, interpreting and communicating the results of geotechnical studies.

Develop research analysis and interpretation of geotechnical environment and its implications.

1 - Introduction to Geotechnics.

2 - Geotechnical investigation.

3 - Planning and execution of a site investigation campaign.

4 - Use of geotechnical testing: principles, application and interpretation.

4.1 - Execution of soil tests.

4.2 - Execution of rock and rock masses tests.

5 - Study of geomechanical classifications and its use.

6 - Geotechnical zoning: methodology, interpretation and presentation. Applications to dams, roads and underground works.   

7 -Use of Geotechnical Instrumentation.
