Recommended Prerequisites

General knowledge of Materials science/biomaterials.

Teaching Methods

The teaching methods aim at developing knowledge in the interdisciplinary aspects of materials engineering and biological systems, fundamental to the field of biocompatibility. Thus, the classes will address topics of fundamental indole with the objective of teaching the fundamental concepts that allow the development of an interdisciplinary approach. The pratical classes will consist in group work that include the preparation and characterization of materials commonly used in biomedicine. In all classes will be encouraged proactive participation by students.

Learning Outcomes

The content of this course provides an introductory overview and critical evaluation to the most relevant aspects related to the Biocompatibility between biological tissues and invasive materials. The approach used is a multidisciplinary prespeective. The goal is to enable students to acquire the theoretical knowledge (basic and specific) that assist them to understand all the multidisciplinary aspects, especially those related with materials engineering/biomedical engineering, involved in the reaction of biological systems to biomaterials. The purpose extends to the development of practical skills through experimental classes.
