Recommended Prerequisites

Level C1 in Portuguese is a prerequisite for all courses in the program.

Teaching Methods

Oral presentation of syllabus topics (by the teacher or by the students, using previous readings);

Corpora analysis;

Reading assignments, followed by class discussions;

Preparation of a “paper” (following research protocol: theme choice – problem / issue – literature review– hypothesis – choice and application of methods –data analysis – presentation and discussion of results – writing a research article in Portuguese).

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the course, students are expected to:

1. General skills:

- be able to define, with guided supervision, adequate research goals;

- be capable of selecting, with autonomy, credible and relevant information in the light of the research goals defined;

- plan and write an essay/report on the research carried out, and to present it orally.

2. Specific skills:

- master the core concepts covered in the syllabus;

- be able to recognize, describe and explain core structures of Portuguese as a foreign language and second language (PL2), according to a contrastive approach;

- be able to develop research work in the syntax of PL2, taking into account transfer phenomena and using PL2 corpora.

Critical areas of PL2:

1. Noun Phrase: “first noun strategy”, null subjects.

2. Verb Phrase: argument structure.

3. Verbal inflexion categories: tense and mood.

4. Building the sentence: inflexion and agreement, SVO order; case marking; clitic position, anaphorical links.
