Recommended Prerequisites

Level C1 in Portuguese is a prerequisite for all courses in the program.

Teaching Methods

Teaching methodologies aim at developing in students autonomous learning and critical thinking. Guided reading and class discussions on relevant issues are encouraged. A “learning by doing”/"hands on" approach is used to develop the capacity to plan didactic units and lessons, including the design of original teaching materials and the construction of assessment tools.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing  the course, the student is expected to:

1. General skills:

- be able to define, with guided supervision, adequate research goals;

- be capable of selecting, with autonomy, credible and relevant information in the light of the research goals defined;

- plan and write an essay/report on the research carried out, and to present it orally.

2. Specific skills:

- be able to use scientific and didactic knowledge for teaching PL2;

- have a critical (over)view of Portuguese FL/ SL teaching methods and strategies;

- master tools for planning didactic units and lessons of PL2;

- know the principles for evaluation and construction of instructional materials;

- know different kinds of assessment and master the tools for designing and construction of assessment instruments.

1. Language policy reference documents: Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

2. Principles and methods in PL2 teaching.

3. Planning of didactic units for learners of different levels and competences (according to CEFRL).

4. Materials for language teaching: definition, evaluation and construction.

4. L2 assessment . Assessment types. Principles for constructing assessment tools. European Language Portfolio.
