Recommended Prerequisites

Level C1 in Portuguese is a prerequisite for all courses in the program.

Teaching Methods

Syllabus topics are developed through explanations and reading assignments, supplemented by class discussions and empirical data analysis. The teaching  method thus intersects lectures and student collaboration.

Learning Outcomes

This seminar provides students with basic tools for understanding  the development of pragmatic competence of learners of Portuguese as L2, in the areas of social deixis and speech acts, that are particularly sensitive to diaphasic variation.

Upon completing  the course, the student is expected to:

1. General competencies:

- be able to define, with guided supervision, adequate research goals;

- be capable of selecting, with autonomy, credible and relevant information in the light of the research goals defined;

- plan and write an essay/report on the research carried out, and to present it orally.

2. Specific competencies

- master the core concepts covered in the syllabus;

-  correlate a number of linguistic structures in Portuguese with different communicative goals and distinct social contexts of interaction;

-identify the discourse strategies used in Portuguese to express politeness, in what concerns forms of address and indirect speech acts.

Syllabus

1.             Linguistic competence and communicative competence.

2.             Social deixis. Forms of address in Portuguese.

3.             Politeness. The concept of face. Positive and negative politeness strategies.

4.             Doing things with words: speech acts in Portuguese.

4.1.          Expressing information: assertions. Categorical assertions and modalised assertions: linguistic markers in Portuguese.

4.2.          Questions. Different types of questions in Portuguese and their linguistic markers.

4.3.          Orders and requests. Diaphasic variation and politeness: direct and indirect expression of directive speech acts.

4.4.          Expressing psychological states and emotions.

4.5.          Compromissive speech acts.

5.             Patterns of interaction in Portuguese involving adjacent pairs (question/answer, request/acceptance or refusal, statement/refutation).
