Provide students with a deep knowledge of the housing system and housing policies, both in Portuguese and in the European context. To develop capacities of critical reflection on the theoretical and methodological challenges of housing studies.

Syllabus

1. Understanding housing systems. Housing in Portugal and in the European Union. The relevance of housing and its specificity as a product. Housing and social welfare, in a context of social, cultural and demographic change. Housing, the labour market, incomes and savings. Housing and investment. Housing, land and urban development and differentiation.

2. Understanding housing policies. Housing policies in the context of public policies. The European context: the diversity of housing systems and policies. Housing policies' instruments. The regulation of tenure: homeownership and renting. Housing finance and housing allowances. Social housing. Housing renewal. The organization of housing policies and the relevance of local housing strategies.

3. Theoretical and methodological challenges for housing studies.
