Teaching Methods

The classes will have as main objective the presentation of the main themes of the Course program, illustrated with case examples covering relevant national and European experiences, followed by discussions organized around case studies and exercises for individual and/or group resolution.

Learning Outcomes

This course is designed to provide PhD students in Spatial Planning with a solid and advanced knowledge on the nature and extent of current environmental problems and related policies within a framework of global change. In this context, attention will be paid to climate change issues and to the specific role of planning in environmental enhancement and the ecosystem balance of human settlements. Students will develop their own capacities for analysis and interpretation of environmental phenomena, and its social, economic and cultural dimensions, as well as the capacities of diagnosis and formulation of policies, in particular with profound spatial implications.

Introduction to the current debate on conservation and enhancement of natural resources, landscape and the quality of environmental quality. Strategies and instruments for environmental policy: national and European perspective. Environmental impact assessment and strategic environmental assessment. The challenge of climate change and its consequences on environmental and planning policies at the global, the regional and the local levels. Environmental policies in land use and urban planning. The paradigm of sustainable development and low carbon policies. The city as an ecosystem. Urban metabolism and resilience. Synthesis and perspectives.
