Recommended Prerequisites

The recommended prerequisites include what is taught in the 1 st cycle courses in the area of  Pharmacy, Medicine, Biology, Agricultural Sciences, Bioanalytical, Chemical Sciences, Chemistry, Biochemistry and other related courses.

Lectures with a strong component of dialogue and application in practical cases, essentially using the audiovisual media ("data show")

Learning Outcomes

This course aims to provide and update technical and scientific knowledge essential for the handling and use of herbal medicines and other health products.

The content of this area of knowledge is focalized in natural products used as “over the counter (OTCs)”  for therapeutic purposes. In Pharmacies the Pharmacist is the first to make contact with health public problems.The development, planning, implementation, and integration related to the various groups of therapeutic drugs will be made in the way that students can advice the patients about the interactions and the toxicity.

The therapeutic review sessions will be, in the main subjects as described in the content. This will complement their didactic education and skill development with the search in the data bases available at the library in the different subjects.

The program will be prepared annually in accordance with the appearance of emerging areas that fall within the educational project of the curricular unit.

Highlights some emerging content in the area of phytotherapy:

-quality, efficacy and safety

-Health products based on plants used in several diseases involving the digestive tract, central nervous system, genital tract, immune system, skin, among other.

-adverse effects and interactions

-toxic plants and herbal medicine in paediatric care

-homeopathy and aromatherapy
