Recommended Prerequisites

Knowledge of at least another foreign language.

Teaching Methods

The teaching-learning process is carried out in four stages:

– the teacher presents new thematic and grammatical material, which is systematized in exercises;

– students carry out work of text translation indidually or in groups;

– in the following session translations are checked and discussed by the whole class;

– the final version of the translation is completed.

Special attention is paid to work with Russian-Portuguese and Portuguese-Russian dictionairies.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students should be able to:

– Master basic notions of Russian grammar and vocabulary corresponding to CEFR level A1.1;

– Develop a general competence in translating beginner’s level texts using the dictionary;

– Acquire social and cultural knowledge on Russia;

– Know how to use Russian dictionaries and grammars as translation support tools.

This seminar prepares students for the next level of Russian Portuguese translation or to continue their learning autonomously.

Syllabus

1. Basic notions of Russian grammar (level A 1.1) and their application to translation; different modules on phonetics, morphology and syntax;

2. Aquisition of basic vocabulary and work with Russian-Portuguese and Portuguese-Russian dictionaries;

3. Reading comprehension exercises and translation of simple, non-literary texts, with explanation of linguistic, sociolinguistic and pragmatic content.
