Teaching Methods

During his curricular internship, the student will be supported by his local supervisor, who is the manager of the internship and of the distribution of the hours of work by all the areas, but will maintain a connection with his internal supervisor, from the Faculty of Pharmacy, as well as with the coordinator of the course. After finishing the internship period, the internal supervisor will go on to guide the student till the end of this unit, in particular, by reviewing the Report Internship that will be submitted to the MSc jury for final public discussion.

Learning Outcomes

The internship is accomplished in selected clinical laboratories, under the supervision of a local mentor in collaboration with a supervisor of the FFUC, aiming that students gain experience in a real work place, in the scope of the main clinical laboratory areas.

Thus, the main goal of the internship is to apply previous acquired knowledge and to help students develop basic skills for working in a Clinical Laboratory, as a Health Higher Technician in the diagnostic laboratorial area, in what concern the laboratory work procedures, quality control implementation and laboratory data interpretation. Initiation to the research work is another potential goal, in particular, for the best students. After completion of the internship, students will have to write an Internship Report, under the guidance and support from both faculty and professionals, which will be subjected to a final public discussion. This report may include a scientific report.

It is supported by a group of professors and of specialists from the Services and Laboratories where the internship takes place. It encompasses traineeships in the main laboratory diagnosis areas, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Hematology and Immunology, in a total number of hours of 1188 (includes all work forms), distributed in an equilibrated way between them. In each area, the student participates in the daily routine work, under the supervision of his mentor, learning and consolidating previously acquired knowledge and gaining basic skills in laboratory work and in interpreting laboratory data.
