Teaching Methods

The teaching methods are:
1. Theoretical analyses of the different exhibition models, with the study of reference texts.
2. Development of interview techniques with artists during studio visits.
3. Analyses of exhibition situations in loco.
4. Study and planning of curatorial projects, both in terms of work installation, as in editorial terms.

Learning Outcomes

1. Understanding the diversity and complexity of the curatorial practices;
2. To be familiar with the exhibition studies field of knowledge;
3. To know how to integrate the diferente fields of curatorial practice (choosing, installing, editing);
From the point of view of the skills that are targeted:
1. To develop the ability to establish consistent links between works of art and authors that can be expressed in an informed and clear discourse;
2. To build analytical capacity regarding the exhibition context

1. What is curating?
2. The historical process of curating: the birth of the museum in the 18th century.
3. The museum of modern art: Alexander Doerner’s model.
4. The museum of modern art: Alfred H.’s model. The structure of the departmental museum.
5. The rise of curatorial discourses in the 1960’s.
6. The distinctive character of curatorial mediation.

Themes:
1. Curating and critical thinking: the problem of judgment production; choosing and excluding.
2. The relation between artist and curator: negotiation, mediation, questioning.

Practicum
1. Curatorial methodologies: observation, interview, studio visit.
2. Analyses of exhibition spaces: museum spaces, alternative spaces.
Exhibition visits and critic.
