Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of this course unit, the student will be able to:
- Understand the basic mechanisms of drug action at the cellular and molecular level and their relation with cardiovascular, respiratory, nervous system and gastrointestinal diseases and cancer.
- Understand the various levels and methods used to identify the potential pharmacological activity of new molecules, characterize their mechanisms of action and evaluate their therapeutic potential.
- Apply the knowledge acquired to improve drug design.

Syllabus

1. Neuropharmacology: neurotransmitter systems as pharmacological targets; antidepressants and stimulants of
the central nervous system; anxiolytics, sedatives and hypnotics; anti-psychotics; anti-epileptics; pharmacological
targets and therapeutic approaches in neurodegenerative diseases. Pharmacology of the antonomic nervous
system. Pharmacology of pain: opiod and nonopioid central analgesics; general and local anesthetics.
Inflammation and its chemical mediators: pharmacological targets a new antiinflammatory drugs.
2. Pharmacological targets and drugs that affect other organ systems: cardiovascular system, respiratory system, gastrointestinal tract, reproductive and urinary system and endocrine system.
3. Pharmacological targets and drugs used in the treatment of infections and cancer.
