Recommended Prerequisites

Students will be expected to have completed an introductory EU Law course covering in particular its institutional aspects. No less convenient will be to have a notion of the chief aspects of EU's internal market and policies (namely competition policy and commercial policy) as well its external action.

Teaching Methods

Lectures and follow-up discussion on the syllabus topics. Assessment based on individual work on a topic bearing a relevant connection with the matters covered in the course.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students will be expected to understand the essentials of how the European Union works as well as its specific features as an international organization, so they can address its characterization and realize the greatest challenges the European Union is facing today.

Syllabus

Emergence and historical development of the Communities and the European Union. Principles on which the EU and EU citizenship are founded. Internal Market and competition rules. The Area of Freedom, Security and Justice. Economic policy, and monetary policy in particular. External action by the Union. The institutional framework and its development. The EU legal system and its court system. Enhanced cooperation.
