Recommended Prerequisites

The student should have fundamental concepts on biology and chemistry, basic comprehension of writen english and user IT domain.

Teaching Methods

The curricular unit is delivered face-to-face with lectures, tutorials and laboratory/clinical practice which are engaged according to the theme. Lectures are mainly based on the oral exposition of concepts, which are complemented by the demonstration of their aplicability to dental practice in tutorials. In laboratory/clinical practice classes the students are placed in full clinical practice contexts and assist to the execution of treatments.

Learning Outcomes

The main objective of the curricular unit is to promote the integration of newcomer students in the field of Dentistry. The proposed learning outcomes are:
1.To understand the basic functioning of the stomatognathic system and relate its functional features with the respective anatomic stuctures
2.To identify and define the diferente áreas of Dentistry and describe their acting field
3.Acquire general education in Dentistry adequate to understand the etiology and prevention of oral diseases and to assume a responsible attitude towards the promotion of Oral Health.
4.Acquire knowledge relative to the legal requirements associated to the practice of dentistry as service providing profession, which include the fundamentals of ethics and deontology.
5.To be competent in the relation with other members of the dental team in order to establish an effective communication with technical terminology and accuracy in the use of basic terms and to assure a safety environment.

1. Short history of Dentistry – from antiquity to present
2. Dental and periodontal anatomy
3. Desinfection and sterilization in Dentistry
4. Organization of a dental office (space provision, ergonomics)
5. Introduction to the áreas of Radiology, Operative Dentistry, Endodontics, Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics, Occlusal Rehabilitation, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Periodontology, Paediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics
6. Investigation in Dentistry
7. Dentistry as service provider professional activity
8. Fundamentals of ethic principles.
