Teaching Methods

There are expository, theoretical and collective teaching face-to-face classes. Small groups of students will be exposed to pharmacological demonstrations and problem-based learning strategies (practical and theoretical-practical training).

Learning Outcomes

This course unit type aims to dissect how substances used by man (drugs) reach and modulate their biological targets. Drugs that have favorable benefit/risk (therapeutic) and unfavorable benefit / risk (toxins) will be discussed. We aim to provide students with the ability to apply the principles of physiology to rationalize about drugs. We further aim to teach simple yet practical principles that lay the foundation of rational drug therapy. Rational and structured approach to choice of therapeutic drugs for specific clinical cases that do not require deep knowledge of pathophysiology will be conveyed in practical classes; we ultimately aim to empower future doctors to prescribe according to Evidence Based Medicine (eg Cook et al, Chest 1192 ; 102:2053 ) .
