Recommended Prerequisites

The student should have completed the units of Introduction to Dentistry and Introduction to Psychology in order to successfully achieve the onjectives of the present unit. It is advisable to present basic knowledge of the english language and user IT domain.

Teaching Methods

The curricular unit is delivered face-to-face with lectures, tutorials and laboratory/clinical practice which are engaged according to the theme. Thus, major concepts are explained in lectures and techniques described in tutorials. In laboratory/clinical practice classes instruments and materials are introduced to the students and handled according to reccomendations, and some of the techniques are applied in Frasaco models or in clinical simulation with groups of students. Information and communication technologies explore with the use of personal computers the support softwares.

Learning Outcomes

The main objective is to provide to the students the tools needed for the optimization of the specific learning of the technical units, preventing accidents and lesions due to the clinical practice and assuring correct communication between professionals and with patients.

1. Introduction to Clinical Practice – acquire technical language related to proceedings in distinct áreas of Dentistry, to know basic concepts, treatments, materials and conditions for clinical practice of each unit (paediatrics, operative dentistry, endodontics, prosthodontics, et cetera)

2. Ergonomics – acquire knowledge relative to the legal and anthropometric requirements of the infra-structures in order to prevent occupational risks and disorders associated to the practice of dentistry.

1. Introduction to clinical practice

1.2 Basic terminology, pathologies, materials and techniques of the areas of: Operative dentistry; Endodontics; Paediatric dentistry; Orthodontics; Periodontology; Oral surgery; Fixed prosthodontics; Removable prothodontics

2. Ergonomics
2.1 Legal and anthropometric requirements
2.2 work positions
2.3 Occupational risks and diseases in Dentistry
2.4 Biosafety
2.5 Chain of infection, desinfection agents and sterilization

3. Information and Communication Technologies
3.1 Informatic management of dental units/offices
3.2 Documentation of clinical cases
3.3 Protocols for sharing clinical
3.4 Softwares for patient education and communication
3.5 Introduction to evidence-based dentistry
3.6 Bibliographic search strategies and reference manager softwares
3.7 Methods for scientific communication: articles, monographies, presentations.
