Clinical Unit 4

Recommended Prerequisites

A. Knowledge – there are educational concepts in previous units that allow the correct understanding of the considered unit, such as: Head and neck anatomy, Dental anatomy, Estomatognatic system physiology and pre-clinical IV unit; B. Skills and Atittudes – English, ICT, Motivation, Professionalism, Proper clothing and personal appearance, good communication with patients.

Teaching Methods

The sylabus presented reflects the steps necessary for the understanding of prosthetic rehabilitation, the resolution of pathologies related to the temporomandibular joint disorders and  patients occlusion. The objectives to be achieved are set in an integrated way with the clinical procedures. The seting of prior knowledge, with the contents illustrated by clinical cases allow students to prepare treatment solutions.  Interactive chats with the syudents are also encouraged. The lectures use computer tools deemed necessary, as well as web access allowing  a stimulating discussion with the audience.

Clinical classes take place  at the CHUC with the patients enrolled in this curricular unit. 

Learning Outcomes

This clinical unit provides the learning in action of clinical skills devoted to dental prosthesis and ocllusal pathology. The students must be able to:

a) Know the  basic principles about partial fixed and removable dental prosthesis.

b) Recognize clinical indications according the different types of tooth-supported or implant-supported partial fixed and removable prosthesis .

c) Choose appropriate prosthetic materials and components as well as fabrication procedures.

d) Do tooth preparation concerning partial fixed and removable prosthesis as well as adequate bite registrations.

e) Evaluate signs and syntoms of TMA joint and perform terapeutical clinical procedures.

Fixed Prosthod II:
Fixed Parcial Prosthesis: biomechanics, pontics, Try-in, maintenance. Cementation. Maryland adhesive prosthesis.
Attachments. Implantology: evolution, osteointegration, diagnosis and treatment planning; types of implants;
procedures; complications. Guided bone regeneration; bone grafts and membranes. Aesthetics: Facial and dental analysis
Removable Prosthod II
Physiopathology of the geriatic edentulous patient; Anatomy and clinical examination of the edentulous patient;
Impression techniques; Physical factors of Retention and Stability; Vertical dimension of occlusion; Intermaxillary registration and Aesthetics; Immediate dentures and Root overdentures; Oro-maxillofacial Prosthesis;
Overdentures
Occlusal Rehabilitation II
Pain modulation. TMD. Persistent idiopatic pain. Fibromialgia. DD with other pain disorders. Tumoral pathology.
Placebo/nocebo effect. Ethical concerns. Pain-patient relationship. Evidence based dentistry. Complementary therapeutic aproches.
