Teaching Methods

Method based on face-to-face exposition, a practical component related with problem solving and specific use of data analysis software as well as  complementary learning based on reading articles.

During the practical classes students will be encouraged to participate in research tasks in pairs or in groups, oral presentation of ideas as well as to interact with the different actors in the teaching-learning process. Students are encouraged to read articles and book chapters summarized a minimum of 25 articles in English (25x4 hours) and 10 articles in Portuguese (10x2 hours). It is assumed that an article in English requires 4 hours of reading and an article in Portuguese two hours.

Learning Outcomes

The course addresses a wide range of topics related to sports and exercise, providing students intervention skills to act in Adapted Physical Activity contexts in order to meet specific needs of each groups. It is intended that the student:
[1] Know the specific characteristics of each of the groups covered with disabilities, their functional capabilities and limitations to functional
[2] Master the main intervention strategies both at teaching level and at promotional level creating regular physical activity habits in each one of the groups under consideration
[3] Develop a critical spirit and the ability to diagnose, plan, implement and assess adapted sport projects as well as regular exercise programs targeted to these groups

Module 1, 2 and 3 - Exercise and physical activity in individuals with physical, intellectual and sensory limitations - [1]Causes, effects, psychomotor profiles and functional classification systems; [2] Physical and leisure activities and exercise versus competitive sport in each of the groups analyzed;

Module 4 - Exercise and well-being in elderly people - [1] Determinants of aging; [2] Functional changes of the elderly, [3] Physical activity as a determinant of successful aging, [4] Exercise and immunosenescence, [5] Physical activity and quality of life and [6] Evaluation of the functional condition of the elderly;


Module 5 - Specificities of diets in groups with an high potential for inactivity - [1] Food groups, [2] Physiology of Nutrition, [3] Assessment of food intake and nutritional status, [4] Healthy eating, [5 ] Obesity [6] Malnutrition, [7] Food for the elderly and disabled people.
