Recommended Prerequisites

Advanced language skills in Portuguese and English. Knowledge of literature and text analysis techniques.

Teaching Methods

1. Combination of lectures and interactive classes to introduce and discuss theoretical concepts, issues and approaches.

2. Discussion of theoretical texts on translation and literary translation.

3. Reading, analysis and discussion of literary texts, especially from a translation perspective. Comparative text analysis.

4. Discussion and comparison of translation solutions. Translation criticism exercises.

5. Practical literary translation exercises.

(Some of the above can be carried out in class or at home, individually or collectively).

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students should have developed

- their language skills in English and Portuguese, as well as an awareness of contrastive aspects of these languages and their cultural and literary contexts

- a critical approach to notions like conclusive reading and stable concepts of authorship, originality and meaning

They should be able to

- understand literary texts as enabling meaning(s) through re-negotiation of form and sense, and the importance of the text’s materiality

- question the concept of a “perfect”/definitive translation, and theoretically discuss the production of pleasure & meaning in a text and its translation

- analyze texts of various literary genres, especially from a translation perspective

- critically analyze a literary translation; compare and assess different choices and strategies in different translations of a text

- apply appropriate translation strategies to different kinds of texts

- produce translations of a variety of literary texts.

Syllabus

Translation practice & analysis promote a critical approach to such notions as definitive readings, stable concepts of authorship, originality & meaning, & the “ideal” of a perfect/correct/closed translation. Critical reflection on translation in general will include the specificities of literary translation. The course offers an introduction to literary translation from an approach that views texts as enablers of meanings and readings, based on the renegotiation of the relation between “form” & “sense”. Theoretical texts on literary translation will be discussed. The practical component includes analysis of texts from a variety of genres & periods, mostly from a translation perspective; discussion of translations of different authors & poetic forms (traditional/fixed forms, different contemporary formats, narrative prose & drama), comparing different translations of the same text & producing individual and group translations of varied literary texts.
