Recommended Prerequisites

Complete and sound mastery of the Portuguese language. Knowledge of the main canonical texts of the Portuguese literature from the 13th to the 18th centuries.

Teaching Methods

This unit will function in seminars. In addition to the theoretical presentation carried out by the teacher, who will resort to various strategies and teaching support materials, the students' active critical contribution, both in the specialized presentation of discussion subjects and in the continuous questioning of the main subjects to be addressed, will also be valued.

Learning Outcomes

This course unit aims to reflect critically on the understanding of Portuguese Literature as a diachronic phenomenon, in a time scale ranging from the Middle Ages to the mid18th century, in constant articulation with other discursive practices. On one hand, an inquiry of the theoretical assumptions at the basis of the literary historiography paradigms in force in distinct time periods, namely those of the 19th and 20th centuries, and a careful research of the most recent methodological proposals will be carried out. On another hand, this unit will also attempt to address specific situations of a strained character with a significant interest for the understanding of the issue of literary evolution, through the critical analysis of a selected textual corpus.
