Learning Outcomes

In 2010 about 8% of the population was elderly, that is 65 years or more (according to the WHO definition). In the elderly, are 4 times more frequent surgery interventions than the rest of the population, therefore in the near future, a greater proportion of proposed patients for surgical treatment will be over 65 years, a substantial number of patients over 85 years. Elderly patients are a unique clinical group with anatomical, physiological and biochemical own. Thus we can say that the treatment of elderly patients who need to undergo a surgical treatment is a real challenge for anesthesiologists and surgeons. Students should recognize patients who will benefit from standard treatment and those for whom treatment risks outweigh the benefits and know the medical-surgical strategies, particularly individual in this age group, to improve tolerance to surgery.
