Basic knowledge in anatomy and renal physiology; capacity for analysis and interpretation of the main basic clinical and analytical changes in renal disease; basic knowledge in English.

Learning Outcomes

Must know the anatomical and functional characteristics of normal kidney; should know and understand the main morphological and functional changes of the kidney in the elderly; should know and understand  the pathophysiological changes of the kidney in the elderly; must know to diagnose the functional changes of the kidney in the elderly; should know how to establish a plan for preventing the progression of kidney disease in the elderly with attention to diet and medication.

Syllabus

Renal morphology and adaptation in the aging kidney;

Modifications of renal physiology with aging, structural and functional changes, clinical manifestations resulting from the aging process;

Study of renal function: The glomerular filtration rate and how to evaluate: creatinine / GFR correlation;

Theories of aging and biological mechanisms in the kidney; inhibitor mechanisms of progression of renal aging - drugs;

Major renal pathologies observed with advancing age;

The adjustment of the dosage of drugs to renal function.
