Recommended Prerequisites

Anatomy and physiology of the genito-urinary tract. Basic clinical, laboratory and imaging urological semiology. Pathophysiology, epidemiology, clinical, study, prognosis and therapy of the most common urogenital disorders.

Teaching Methods

Presentation of illustrative slides, interactive discussion with students - open and addressed questions raised by the faculty; interactive discussion among teachers; paradigmatic clinical cases exposed by teachers; Discussion of concrete clinical cases presented by teachers; session of questions and doubts.

Learning Outcomes

Characterize the changes of the urogenital system of the elderly, characterize the most common urologic diseases in the elderly. Identify the clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic differences of the most common urologic diseases in the elderly. Benign hyperplasia of the prostate, prostate cancer, urinary incontinence, sexual dysfunction, urinary tract infections.

Syllabus

Anatomy and physiology of the urogenital system . Aging of the urogenital tract.

Basic clinical , laboratory and imaging examination in urology: clinical history, physical examination, PSA, bacteriology of urin.

Basic urological material: probes, catheter, collector bags.

1. BPH in the elderly : clinic, study and expectant, medical and surgical management.

2. Prostate cancer in the elderly : interpretation of PSA and its derivatives , importance of DRE. Indication for prostate biopsy and staging of the disease. Therapeutic.

3. Sexual dysfunction in the elderly: epidemiology and particularities in the management. Líbido alterations. Clinical picture. Erectile dysfunction: summary diagnostic approach. Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors.

4. Urinary incontinence in the elderly: epidemiology, pathophysiology and particularities in the approach.

5. Urinary tract infections in the elderly. Symptoms, epidemiology and characterizatio. Simple and complicated infections. Asymptomatic bateriuria.
