Recommended Prerequisites

- Basic knowledge of anatomy, histology e physiology of the eye and adnexa.

- Basic knowledge of ocular pathophysiology, pathology and pharmacology

- Basic knowledge of semiology.

- Basic knowledge of systemic diseases with ocular manifestations.

Teaching Methods

The classes in the form of seminars are fundamental for the acquisition of knowledge and skills to perform a basic eye evaluation (preventive , diagnostic and therapeutic tasks) at the level of elderly primary health care. They strongly emphasizes the image in order to recognize lesions or changes by inspection.

Learning Outcomes

The aim of this curricular unit is to provide students the knowledge and skills to perform preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic orientation tasks that any differentiated physician must do at a geriatric health care level. They must acquire the basic knowledge to diagnose and treat the most common and simple eye problems, and to refer the most complex or serious age.related conditions to an ophthalmology specialist:
1. To collect an ophthalmology clinical history, integrated in a systemic clinical history
2. To perform the fundamental steps of the ophthalmological examination
3. To make an accurate differential diagnosis
4. To know the most important ophthalmological clinical pictures in the elderly
5. To know the most important ocular manifestations of systemic diseases
6. To diagnose and treat the most common and simple eye diseases the elderly
7. To know when to refer the most complex or serious conditions to an ophthalmology specialist.
