Teaching Methods

The theoretical lessons are based in the classical model of knowledge transmission, using audio-visual presentation to illustrate the various subjects explained. During the class questions are asked in order to stimulate student participation and assess the learning outcomes. In this way dogmatic exposition limitations will be corrected allowing a pedagogic interaction between teacher and student.

In laboratory classes, students execute the works proposed in the laboratorial program.   

Learning Outcomes

The discipline of Clinical Microbiology Laboratory aims to connect the knowledge acquired in previous disciplines, particularly, Clinical Bacteriology, Clinical Parasitology, Clinical Mycology and Clinical Virology and apply them to the laboratory diagnosis of infections of various body systems. One of the most important roles of the Clinical Microbiologist is to know and understand how to do:
a) Culture of microorganisms from biological samples
b) Classification and identification of these organisms
c) Prediction and interpretation of the susceptibilities profiles to antimicrobials

The knowledge gained will enable students to understand the pathogenesis and clinical features of infectious diseases, as well as acquiring skills in the diagnostic laboratory microbial. The acquisition of knowledge is crucial to the performance of future clinical analyst, as a health professional.

Theoretical program
Etiology, epidemiology, clinical manifestations and laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases:
Infections of the upper and lower respiratory tract
Infections of skin and soft tissue
Infections of the gastrointestinal tract
Urinary tract infections
Infections of the central nervous system
Sexually transmitted infections
Emerging technologies for the diagnosis of infectious diseases

Laboratory program
Analysis of clinical samples obtained from different infections in order to identify the infectious agents   
involved and determine their susceptibility to antimicrobial agents.
