Recommended Prerequisites

Acquired knowledge in 1st Cycle Courses in the areas of Basic Studies in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmaceutical Biomedicine, Bio-analytical Sciences, Biomedical Sciences and other courses considered adequate by the Coordination of the Master Course.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical classes, for course subjects presentation and discussion, giving relevant examples in drugs purification and structural analysis. In the theoretical-practical classes, demonstrative exercises are presented and discussed.

Learning Outcomes

Learning on purification (chromatographic) and structure analysis (spectroscopic and spectrometric, diffractometric and calorimetric) techniques and application to the structural elucidation of drugs.

Syllabus

Purification of drugs. Preparative and semi-preparative liquid chromatography.
Differential Scanning Calorimetry. Introduction and application to the study of phase transitions and polymorphism.
Infrared Spectroscopy. Group frequencies and interpretation of IV spectra.
NMR Spectroscopy. Fundamentals (nuclear spin, chemical shifts, coupling constants, magnetic equivalencies, effects of the different functional groups on the chemical shifts, 1H and 13C NMR and their specificities and containing information). Advanced techniques in NMR (bidimensional techniques; correlation techniques).
Mass spectrometry. Fundamentals. Ionization sources. Separation of the samples. Applications. Interpretation of mass spectra.
X-ray Diffraction. Introduction and equipment. Interpretation of diffractograms of single crystals. X-ray spectra.
