Teaching Methods

In the curricular unit various teaching methods will be used, with emphasis the expositive and active methods, being encouraged diverse teaching and learning startegies such as review articles on a topic to be defined, the development of small works on the issues covered in class; preparing questions about the content of the classes; performing small summaries on topics addressed.

Learning Outcomes

This curricular unit represents a space for critical reflection on the evolution of policies and practices in education and training of adults, in their articulation and under the impact of social changes that have occurred over the last sixty years. Therefore, students must be able to: 

Recognize the importance and place of education and training of adults in the general framework of education and training.

Distinguish times and the crucial changes that have occurred in policies and practices in education and training of adults in the last sixty years.

Describe the policies and practices for the increase of education and skills levels of the adult population in Portugal.

Interpret the impact of globalization processes and policy changes in education and training.

Assess the guidelines set in supranational organizations on policies and practices in education and training of adults.

Syllabus

Tradition of adult education; clarification of concepts and trends. The first conferences. From permanent education to lifelong learning. The education and training throughout life and the European Education Area. Education and training policies throughout life: tensions and possibilities. 

Adult Education Policies in Portugal: from the first political initiatives to the national adult education campaign (1952); the national plan of literacy and basic adult education (1979); continuing vocational training; policies and practices of professional certification. The resurgence of public policy on adult education - policies and practices of professional certification: the ANEFA the ANQEP. 

Contexts of education and training of adults practices developed by different types of institutions – companies, state institutions, private social solidarity institutions (IPSS) and non-governmental organizations
