Recommended Prerequisites

- Related areas: Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmacology; Animal Physiopathology, Pharmacotherapy;

- Generic skills: analysis and synthesis; information management; critical thinking; self-driven learning; theoretical knowledge application into practical problem solving; group research ability.

- Specific skills: to know the physicochemical and kinetic mechanisms related to drug release from pharmaceutical dosage forms; to understand the technological variables that allow to modulate drug release in the different animal species;

- Linguistic skills: to dominate both portuguese and english languages with the purpose of fullfilling the course unit's objectives.

Teaching Methods

- Theorical lessons: lectures, supported by electronic means;

- Induction for student participation in scientific activities.

Learning Outcomes

- Study of the pharmaceutical science principals that can be applied in the development of different dosafge forms for animal use, physically and chemically stable and bioavailable, with efficacy and non-toxic, as well as the study of preparation and administration techniques;

- Main objective: to give students valuable tools for knowledge acquisition on the various aspects that are related to the preparation of medication for animal use.

- Specific knowledge to be obtained: different pharmaceutical dosage forms for animal use; intra and interspecies differences in required active pharmaceutical ingredient dosage; pharmacokinetic parameters; drug residues in animal tissues that are harmfull for human consumption; medication through food and drinking water; food additives; material used in veterinary drug administration.
