Compulsory
2nd Cycle Studies - Mestrado
Recommended Prerequisites
Not applicable.
Teaching Methods
The lecture method will be used to introduce theoretical topics, resorting to audio-visual means.
Practical work will involve
1. A case study on a concrete situation of risk, preferrably near Coimbra;
2. Fielwork taking place in one or more trips with the aim of observing recent manifestations of natural
hazards.
Learning Outcomes
The main goal of this seminar is to lead students to understand the relations between natural processes and vulnerabilities resulting from human occupation of space, as well as the consequences deriving from them, in a perspective of application to spatial planning that seeks to minimize the effects of the full manifestation of the natural hazards, namely disasters.
Work Placement(s)

Introduction. Accuracy of concepts [Risk (potentially damaging / dangerous process; vulnerability;
consequence), Danger, Crisis, Disaster ...];
1. Geophysical hazards (earthquakes and volcanoes) and spatial planning;
2. Climatic and hydrological risks and their implications at different levels of spatial planning;
3. Geomorphological hazards and their consequences for regional planning;
4. Dendrocaustologic risks and different instruments of spatial planning.
