Recommended Prerequisites

Knowledge of Translation Theory. Knowledge of English to enable access to bibliography. Final Master thesis/translation project /internship (report) in progress.

Teaching Methods

Lectures provide practical knowledge as well as models of approach to Translation Studies, which are analyzed and discussed in class; oral presentation of final projects by the students.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students will be familiar with research methods and techniques, the process of preparing and writing academic papers and projects, especially in the area of Translation Studies, having acquired the skills and competences needed for completing their thesis/translation project /internship report. They will also be able to discuss and reflect on translation related theoretical and methodological issues, as well as on their choices. At the end of the semester, they will have finished and presented the proposals for their Master’s thesis/translation project /internship report.

Syllabus

a) Advanced research and translation tools.

b) Organization of the thesis/translation project /internship report.

c) Styles and formatting.

d) Time management.

e) Theoretical paradigms (linguistic and functionalist approaches).

f) Approaches to translation in Cultural Studies. Examples of relationship between theory and practice. Students are encouraged to apply these models to Translation Studies in a short paper on translation criticism.

g) Bibliographical research; organization of material, summaries.

h) Quotations, footnotes and bibliographical references.

i) Academic discourse: types, examples and exercises.

j) Writing the thesis/ project/ report: structure, style and register.

l) Presentation of proposals for thesis/translation project /internship report.
