Syllabus

This course is essentially practical, providing application of the concepts and methods presented in the Translation Theory seminar.

1. Translation of a wide range of German literary texts representative of different 19th and 21st century genres, subgenres and styles (narrative texts, poetry and drama).

2. Processes of cultural transfer and specific aspects of literary translation, considering contrastive aspects of the systems involved in a synchronic and diachronic perspective: linguistic systems as primary modeling systems and literary systems as secondary modeling systems.

3. Concept of source text and the relationship between author and translator.

4. Identification of various problems related to the language pair, the culture pair and specific textual norms and conventions, always taking the function of the translatum into account.
