Teaching Methods

1. Lectures on theoretical concepts and exemplification

2. Translation-oriented text analysis exercises

3. Written translation exercises as homework assignments, with individual comment in class

4. Individual or group oral translation exercises

5. Translation of the same source text in different communicative TC contexts

6. Reading parallel texts; vocabulary and phraseology extraction

7. Comparison of dictionary entries

Learning Outcomes

This seminar enables students to

1. Understand authentic Dutch LSP texts from areas such as administration, law, medicine, etc.

2. Master Portuguese syntax, vocabulary, and stylistics, paying special attention to critical aspects in contrast to Dutch;

3. Distinguish different text types, their structure, phraseology and conventions, in the Dutch and Portuguese contexts;

4. Understand the co-ordinates of the source and target communicative situation;

5. Analyze a text from a translation perspective, understanding the importance of the function of the translatum for the translation strategy;

6. Apply knowledge acquired in Translation Theory and Applied Informatics and Terminology;

7. Work with different tools and resources: bilingual and specialized dictionaries, internet pages, databases, etc.

Syllabus

1. Familiarization with the main principles of the functionalist approaches to translation;

2. Oral and written translation of various text genres;

3. Translation-oriented analysis of the texts to be translated;

4. Research and analysis of parallel texts in Portuguese; text comparison in a contrastive perspective;

5. Familiarization with multiple translation problems;

6. Evaluation of problem solving strategies according to the function of the translatum;

7. Familiarization with different types of tools (dictionaries, glossaries, CAT, etc.).
