Teaching Methods

Expository methods are used to introduce key concepts and theoretical approaches, and interactive methods to discuss the topics and texts proposed for each session, including also exercises of analysis, comparison and production of translations both individually and in group.

Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to:

– analyze texts of different genres and areas of specialization, particularly from the viewpoint of translation;

– make a critical analysis of translations; distinguish, describe and evaluate the choices and strategies used in different translations of the same text;

– apply appropriate translation strategies to texts of different genres and fields;

– translate a wide variety of texts;

– apply the knowledge acquired in the 1st semester seminars, namely Theory of Translation, Advanced Composition Skills and Technical Writing, and Applied Informatics and Terminology.

Syllabus

1. Historical, cultural and linguistic issues in the translation of texts of different genres and from different academic fields (e.g. medicine, law and social sciences).

2. Medicine: analysis and translation of Patient Reported Outcomes and specialized articles.

3. Law: fundamental legal concepts in Portuguese law and Anglo-American law. Translation of theoretical texts and different kinds of legal documents. Comparative study of the Portuguese and English versions of the same texts.

4. Social sciences: relevant terms and concepts in the areas of sociology, economics, psychology and history. Comparative study of translations in these areas. Analysis and translation of academic articles.
