Recommended Prerequisites

Advanced language skills in Portuguese and French (CEFR level C1)

Teaching Methods

Practical and interactive methods, involving individual and group translation of various types of texts; identifying and solving problems, as well as choosing the most appropriate translation strategies for each type of text; and group discussion on specific difficulties and possibilities for addressing them (systematic comparison of different proposals).

In addition to participating in class activies, students are asked to carry out homework assignments (preparation of texts to be translated).

Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to

– analyze texts of different genres, particularly from the viewpoint of translation;

– make a critical analysis of translations; distinguish, describe and evaluate the choices and strategies used in different translations of the same text;

– apply appropriate translation strategies to texts of different genres and fields;

– apply the knowledge acquired in the 1st semester seminars, namely Theory of Translation, Advanced Composition Skills and Technical Writing, and Applied Informatics and Terminology.

Syllabus

Practical translation exercises of a variety of Portuguese LSP texts into French.

LSP vocabulary will be acquired through the translation of technological, medical, economic and legal texts.

Preferentially, authentic documents will be translated in order to prepare students for future translation jobs.
