Teaching Methods

In lectures, the teaching method  consists of orderly, coherent and systematic presentations by the instructor. In so doing, while the instructor seeks to help the students to understand the issues and the solutions posited in the laws, he also seeks to provide a contextualized perspective of the syllabus so that the students may understand in each stage the underlying rationale of what is being taught as well as its relevance.

In discussion classes, the teaching method consists of reviewing the subject matters taught in the lectures by emphasizing key legal provision and the meaning and scope of the chief legal concepts. As a way of training the techniques taught by the instructor, specific cases (from case law) are examined, discussed and solved in class, either by means of team-working or individually or as homework.

Learning Outcomes

The course is designed to provide students with knowledge on the basic Civil Law principles as well as the notions, legal constructs and overall framework of the issues dealt with in the General Part of the Portuguese Civil Code in what concerns the legal relationship, in particular the subjects of the legal relationship. It also aims to familiarize students with civil law vocabulary as well as with legal and technical reasoning. An effort is simultaneously made to inculcate a practical sense of the Law  by understanding of legal solutions and their case law.

In addition, students are expected to be able to describe the basic Civil Law principles and explain, examine and apply the rules pertaining to the subjects of legal relation.
