Recommended Prerequisites
European Union Law I, as it will be taught, presupposes previous knowledge of Constitutional Law and International Law. However, since not all students (especially foreign incoming students) have this knowledge, an effort will be made to present some basic concepts of these subjects, in order to facilitate the understanding of European Union Law I.
Teaching Methods
Teaching will comprise both theoretical and practical classes. In the former, teaching will be predominantly expository. In the latter, teaching will occasionally follow more Socratic and problem solving lines.Students will be provided some studying materials through the University electronic platform known as NONIO.In order to get the best marks, students are encouraged to attend classes and engage in autonomous legal research, exploring the content of different textbooks, books, institutional documents, law review articles and judicial decisions related to the subjects mentioned in class.
Learning Outcomes
After coming, the Lisbon Treaty enacted a significant structural change in the E U and its legal system. One of the primary objectives of this course unit consists in presenting an updated perspective on the law of the Eu U, while at the same time mentioning the process of European integration since its inception with the Treaties of Paris (1951) and Rome (1957). The law of the E U will be presented as a part of the internal law, with quasi-federal characteristics and unavoidable implications for all the different branches of law.
The course unit of E U Law I aims at preparing the students to know and understand the origin and the process of European Integration and to understand the normative and institutional structures of the E U after the Lisbon Treaty. Moreover, it purports to facilitate the acquisition of the necessary competencies to operate within the legal system of the E U and to understand the relevant nodes of interoperability with Constitutional and international law.
