Theory classes, consisting of presentations by the instructor; practical lessons, focusing on the hardest topics and on student monitoring.

Learning Outcomes

The course is designed for Law students whose grasp of mathematics is not in principle beyond elementary school.

Although contemporary Law Schools’ purpose is not to provide formation for economists, jurists are required, more than ever, to be familiar with the basics of economics and be sensitive to economic and finance related issues insofar as they are dealt with by the legal community.

Hence, rather than being economics-oriented, this course is specifically concerned with the training of good jurists.

By the end of it students are expected to better understand the foundations of a good number of rules and legal concepts, and also have a good grasp of the meaning and scope of law ruled economic issues that law professionals must be aware of.

Syllabus

The program consists of an analysis and description of the evolution of the economic systems, starting with ‘primitive comunism’ down to the most recent capitalism. In this connection, current issues such as regulation, globalization and regional integration, as well as a comparison between keynesianism and neomonetarism, will be discussed as well. The remaining topics are macro- and microeconomics, particularly: national accounting, markets and prices.
