Recommended Prerequisites

This unit requires previous knowledge of molecular and cellular biology.

Teaching Methods

There are theoretical teaching classes and laboratory/practical classes for anatomical models manipulation and iv vitro organ experimentation. It will be used multimedia devices and schemes "framework". Worksheets will be distributed in laboratory classes for resolution under consultation.

Learning Outcomes

This curricular unit aims to enable students to acquire a better control of the interpretative concepts of structures and functioning of the several biological systems of the human body, particularly of the integumentary system, skeletal system, joints, muscular system, nervous system and endocrine system. We intend that students acquire an integrated knowledge of the anatomy, histology and physiology of the several biological systems to better understand their individual functioning as well as their role in organization of the human body and homeostasis.

Work Placement(s)

Syllabus

Study of the four main types of tissues with enumeration of the main characteristics that determine their classification: epithelial, connective, muscular and nervous.

Functions and structures of integumentary (epidermis, dermis, subcutaneous tissue and accessory organs), skeletal, joint (synovial, fibrous and cartilaginous joints; diarthroses, amphiarthroses and synarthroses) muscle (skeletal, smooth and cardiac muscle), central and peripheral nervous systems (neurons, glia, brain, spinal cord, cranial and spinal nerves) and endocrine system. The electrophysiology of nerve and muscle cells. Neurotransmission.

Observation by microscopy of histological preparations. Study of bones and joints of the axial and appendicular skeleton and muscles using anatomical models. Organ isolation and mounting in organ baths for the study of skeletal, cardiac and smooth muscle contraction. Performing a concentration-response curve to acetylcholine and calculation of EC50.
