Recommended Prerequisites

It takes adequate knowledge in the areas of Chemistry, Anlytical Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, Statistics, Biology, Ecology and instrumental methods of analysis.

Teaching Methods

The unit has a theoretical and a laboratory component. The contents are mainly exposed using a visual media. Although, expository, the critical discussion of the addressed issues is encouraged. In the lectures the contents are mainly exposed using a visual media, promoting the interaction of the students. Analytical methodologies are performed based on isolation, identification and quantification of toxic agents, with emphasis on biological samples and their treatment. On the other hand, the experimental illustration of some general concepts of toxicity is shown.

Learning Outcomes

The course aims to provide students with basic knowledge of toxicology. In the end, the student must acquire basic and specific knowledge in the field of Toxicology; Apply the acquired analytical instrumentation basics; Identify and / or quantify toxic agents involved in occupational, environmental, drug, food or social toxicology, including forensic toxicology and doping; Know how to choose the most appropriate sample for a toxicological analysis; Select the most appropriate analytical method to analyze the toxicant and treat its matrix Perform and organize a complete analytical procedure: sample collection, sample preparation, analytical method of identification and quantification, correct interpretation of the results obtained; Analyze and interpret the results in various areas of Toxicology rigorously; Comply with safety and personal / environmental protection rules and regulations.
