Recommended Prerequisites

Knowledge in biology, molecular biology, microbiology and immunology is recommended to successfully achieve the objectives proposed in this course.

Teaching Methods

The Applied Microbiology curriculum unit teaching will be based on non mandatory theoretical classes and mandatory laboratory classes. Lectures will be supported with presentations illustrating the addressed subjects. During the lectures, questions will be asked in order to encourage student participation and apprehension of the taught subjects.
The most used techniques in microbiological control will be addressed in the laboratory classes. Results will be analyzed and discussed in order to promote a better connection with the reality.

Learning Outcomes

The unit of Applied Microbiology aims to provide students with knowledge about the importance of the microbiological control of food, water and air to the human health. This course will also transmit knowledge of the key techniques and protocols used in the microbiological control of food, water and air.
The acquired knowledge will allow the students to acquire the skills needed to work in microbiological quality control and to understand the relation of microorganisms and health.
