Recommended Prerequisites

Knowledge about the interpersonal, intercultural and interlinguistic dimensions of translation. Mastery of Portuguese language in any of its diatopic variations. This seminar is aimed at beginners in translation from Italian to Portuguese, so it does not require previous knowledge of Italian.

Teaching Methods

Theoretical analysis made by the lecturer; management of translation tools supervised by the lecturer; translation practice and analysis. The techniques and theoretical knowledge presented provide the basis for practical work of translation. Activities will be scheduled in an integrated way: translation of texts related to theoretical exposition in groups and individually; definition of research tools to use; creation of specific tools; analysis of translations; review and reflection on translations.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester, students should

1. have learned how to use dictionaries and grammars of Italian as instruments of support to translation;

2. have learned how to use bibliographies and web sources as research tools for obtaining semantic-pragmatic information;

3. be able to correctly translate informative texts corresponding to level B1 of CEFR.

Syllabus

1. Grammatical and discursive aspects in Italian to Portuguese translation from a contrastive bidimensional perspective and with sporadic reference to other EU languages. Phonetics, morphology, articles, gender and number, prepositions, pronouns, conjugations, indicative and conditional tenses, main irregular verbs, syntax, semantics and lexicon, prefixing and suffixing, neologisms, idiomatic expressions, phrase orders.

2. Correspondence, contrast and interference.

3. Sociolinguistic, anthropological and ideological aspects.

4. Instruments to obtain specific information on the language field; their management. Preparation of glossaries.

5. Means for searching for semantic-pragmatic information; their management.

6. Practise of translation from Italian to Portuguese.

7. Comment, analysis and critical evaluation of translations.
