Recommended Prerequisites

The minimum level of German language ability is B1; a stay in a German-speaking country is desirable.

The minimum level of Portuguese language ability is B2.

Teaching Methods

The teaching methods may comprise:

1 Introduction to theoretical concepts and exemplification

2 Written translation exercises as homework assignments, with previous in-class discussion and individual comment by the teacher

3 Worksheets on specific translation problems (German-Portuguese)

4 Translation oriented text analysis exercises

5 (Partial) translation of the same source text in different communicative TC contexts

6 Reading parallel texts; vocabulary and phraseology extraction

7 Comparison of dictionary entries.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the semester students should be able to translate small texts and reflect upon their work, demonstrating that they

1. understand the basic structures of German syntax and German vocabulary and are aware of critical contrastive aspects pertaining to the language pair and their cultural contexts;

2. have strenghtened their writing skills in Portuguese, as well as developed their awareness regarding critical contrastive aspects;

3. are able to distinguish different text types, their structure, phraseology and conventions in the German and Portuguese contexts;

4. understand the communicative contexts of the source and target texts;

5. are able to carry out a translation oriented text analysis and to understand the importance of text function for the translation strategy to be adopted;

6. are able to use information research methods adequately.

1. Main functionalist approaches to translation.

2. (Mainly written) translation of different text types.

3. Translation oriented text analysis.

4. Compilation of parallel texts in Portuguese; contrastive text analysis.

5. Translation problems.

6. Evaluation of problem solving strategies, importance of the translatum's function.

7. Translation criticism.

8. Translation tools (dictionaries, glossaries, computer tools, etc.).

The students’ profile will determine the weight of each syllabus item.
